After searching the net for a time, I have come to this title. It is very interesting the way we human beings are. I do enjoy observing people's reactions to my articles. However, I do regret the fact that I cannot watch the people that read my articles, and actually see their reactions.

Now if we do our research, this type of metal has been with us since the 1600's, and have come a long way. As I have researched this metal, it is almost free of carbon. By having a fibrous structure, it makes this metal very easy to weld and forge. I do not however, want you to believe that anyone can forge and weld this metal.

Let us remember, this metal has been upgraded for the betterment of the industry, but for the most part still the same metal of the 1600's. Kitchen Remodeling - Islands, Butler's Pantry, Cabinet Heights - Things To Know Before You Begin

Kitchen remodeling is the number one home improvement project in America today. There have been countless books written on the subject of kitchen remodeling and you can find qualified help around every corner. Whether you are planning a do it yourself or a do it for me type of project, I strongly recommend doing your home work and then taking the information you acquire and finding a well qualified designer who can help you put your project together.

No matter what size kitchen remodeling project you are planning you will be money ahead making use of the collaborative input of a designer that you feel comfortable describing your ideas with. I have experienced or more correctly heard of so many people who settle for taking a simple sketch of their existing space to a designer in a big box store and receive a generic lay-out that mimics their old kitchen but with a new skin. I can tell you from years of experience that it costs very little more to think out side of the box. Start with that original sketch but find someone who can give creative input as to options of expanding the space or at least making the best use of the space. Start by clipping photos out of magazines; buy a couple kitchen remodeling magazines to get ideas. You are going to be spending thousands of dollars here, spend a few to get it right. Visit new home open houses and see first hand the popular trends in your area.

Take photos of your exiting kitchen area and adjoining rooms from all angles. Visit several kitchen design showrooms and ask general questions and show them your photo ideas to see how they respond with creative suggestions to get a feel or comfort level of the designers before committing to who will design your new kitchen. Good kitchen design much like architecture or general interior design is more about style and function and flow than anything else. I can not stress often enough that no matter what your budget you need to have a good relationship with the person who will design one of the most used spaces in your home. I usually cover topics like how do you use your kitchen now, is it solely for food preparation or are many family meals eaten there?

Do you entertain guests while cooking or spending leisurely time there in the mornings or evenings? Do you have a nook area or dining table in your existing kitchen? This covers the old use but it is important keep an open mind and consider how you want things to improve, flow better, function better and of course look better in your new kitchen. One great way to make use of space while creating a warm inviting kitchen is through the use of an island or peninsula design. An island will free stand typically in the middle of the kitchen while a peninsula is an extension of the cabinets out from a wall creating a bar top option. Either of these options can be designed with the tops at standard counter height (approximately 36" off the floor) or at what we call bar top height (42" off the floor or 6" above the rest of the counter tops.) We will often design a step up or bar top height counter if the island is facing another room as the raised surface helps hide the regular counter height work surface behind it. If you choose to have your eating bar height at standard counter height then you will use 24" leg bar stools or chairs, if you opt for a 42" top height you will be looking for 30" legged stools.

When it comes to space I encourage you to use these basic minimums when considering an island or peninsula. Most islands are a minimum of 24" deep since that is the standard depth for base cabinets and with a top in place figure 27" of depth. This of course can be made larger by adding a row of 12 or 24" deep cabinets to the other side so I am only listing minimum widths here. You need to plan on 25" out from the wall for the front counter top edge of your base cabinets. A good rule of thumb is to maintain at least a 36" clear walk way around all surfaces and at least 42" where you have a door opening into the walk way such as dishwasher, oven door, or refrigerator.

Next you have to start planning early on what appliances you will be using since the distance out from the wall varies by model number and most kitchen designers will need this information for a good design flow. If you will have an eating area or bar space on your island or peninsula you need to allow another 12" for the top plus the same 36" of clear walk area around it.

Will your new design include a butler's pantry as a connector to the dining room? This is an often overlooked way to add great storage as well as serving convenience. I have seen many butler's pantry designs that include wine chillers or wine centers, beverage dispensers, storage for special occasion dinnerware, and of course a convenient serving area for larger dinners. Remember that a butler's pantry does not have to be a connecting hallway it could be like a large closet space off either the kitchen or dining room. Have you considered a walk in pantry for extra storage? I will often times design a walk in pantry as a closet in the corner of the main kitchen area since this is a very inexpensive way to add great space for less than the cost of a large cabinet. Do you need a message center or small computer station? This could be a place for the cell phone chargers, keys, a family message board, homework center, or family bill center.

Remember here that many things have changed in day to day life since your old kitchen was designed. Will your cooking center need a ventilation system out of the house or will you opt for a recirculation system? With all the modern options I tell people today to design around their daily living, the days of the range needing to be on an exterior wall for venting to work are gone. Have you considered cabinet heights? How tall is your ceiling? For a standard 8' ceiling the rule of thumb is to use 30" tall upper cabinets which puts their tops at 84" off the floor however many people are now using a combination of 30 and 36" tall cabinets to create a staggered look with taller cabinets defining the end or prominent sections. If you have a 9' or taller ceiling then your options expand to using up to 42" tall upper cabinets. When using taller wall cabinets remember these two important considerations; first, how accessible will the tallest sections be for practical storage and second, each progressively taller cabinet series will add a proportionate additional cost to your kitchen so in other words are you getting the most bang for your buck.

Armed with this information and a little research on your end, you should be able gather ample information to select the best designer to help create the kitchen remodel project of your dreams. I am not going to go into any detail here on the subject of actual cabinet and counter top material selection. I cover these topics in great detail at my web site. The same is true of structural or mechanical changes involved with a reworking of the kitchen space since those are covered in their respective areas on my site also. In my expert opinion I think the trend is towards larger and more open kitchen designs. Since the kitchen has become such a central and public space in the average American home. Kitchens: Everyone has one, but what is done with it and what is expected of it varies madly from one person to the next.

"You don't just cook in it":

No longer just for cooking, cleaning and the odd late night tipple, the kitchen has mutated into an uber-room, suited for entertaining, dining and plain old living.

With this in mind, ask yourself: What will you and your family do in your kitchen?

Will you entertain? If so, some of your uncultured guests will undoubtedly arrive early chomping at the bit for vittles. Enter - the Island! Instead of them drooling as if you yourself were covered in fava beans you can lead them to the cleverly placed island which has a convenient overhang complete with stylish stools and a spread of tasty hors d-oeuvres. This way you can work the range from the safe side of town while they sip their Chianti, chat with you and stay the heck out of the way.

If you live in your kitchen, you can combine it with the dining/living room for that hip urban loft-look that the chic and trendy ones love so much. Add a comfy love seat and TV in one corner so that when your recipe fails miserably you need only relax on the sofa, flip the channel and let the Food Network come to the rescue.

Just be sure to remember that the overall layout should allow traffic to pass through each corridor without the danger of bum-brushing pointy counter corners. If you and your partner can't do a twirl, the aisle is too tight.

Gib's Rule of Kitchen Design #2:

"You can't have enough storage."

Remember the last time you moved? Ok, so maybe it's a fog of pain, cursing, and alcohol, but I'm certain of one thing - you had 150 times more stuff than you thought you had. You may be losing sleep not knowing where to put grandma's preserving kettle only to find out that the fondue set and oyster forks are screaming for shelter.

Varied storage shall be your salvation - drawers of different sizes, hidden pull-outs, cupboards with adjustable shelving, and the list goes on. If you depend on large open spaces to solve all your storage problems remember this: there was a reason the dish ran away with the spoon.

The latest trend is to place your possessions on display, restaurant style, adding to the character of your kitchen. This is great if, like me, you're displaying your priceless collection of Faberge eggs, but less so if half-eaten Doritos and pizza boxes are your idea of "life-style propping". And since life without junk-food is but a paupers play, hidden storage is a must.

This storage doesn't have to be limited to fixed cabinetry - you can benefit greatly from the European trend of free standing cabinets. These cabinets are full-on pieces of furniture - they are sturdy, provide a unique aesthetic effect, and can be moved when small children and pets fall behind. They also give you much more freedom in altering your kitchen at a later date with the added bonus of actually bringing it with you when you move. Oh those Europeans are just so clever.

Gib's Rule of Kitchen Design #3:

"Triangles suck"

The classic design rule for kitchens of yore was the "work triangle" From Henry VIII to Betty Crocker the ideal situation seemed to be the ease of movement from fridge to preparation area to stove. Like most commercial propaganda, this was based on little other then stuffing the pockets of the cabinet makers. This antiquated system has now been cast aside for ideas that better suit our brave new world.

The newest design revolution takes its inspiration from professional kitchens. The area is divided into stations, each based around a specific function. You define each station and its purpose - chopping, cooking, baking, and meat preparation are common candidates. If you have a "cake icing" station you clearly have too much time on your hands.

Multiple sinks, varying countertop materials, appropriate appliance placement (say that five times fast), and task lighting all come together to outline separate areas of the kitchen for certain tasks. And these things, my darlings, we shall cover in the very near future.

1930s: The Steam-lined -Depression Era "Modern Kitchen"

By the 1930's, the kitchen was being transformed from the old fashioned kitchen to the "Streamlined-Modern Kitchen" with time saving features, better organization and much improved ventilation. The "all-electric kitchen" was promoted in popular magazines with numerous advertisements showing newly designed small and major appliances. Mixers were the homemakers dream now designed with numerous attachments that could sift flour, mix dough, grate cheese, squeeze lemons, whip potatoes, shred, slice and chop vegetables and even sharpen knives. "Depression Green" was the "in" color used on the wooden handles of kitchen utensils, on kitchen cabinets and tables and on kitchen wares. Often accessories were cream and green replacing the white and black look of the previous decades.

Other popular color combinations in the 1930s were Gray and Red or Crimson, Silver and Green, Pearl Pink and Blue, as well as the use of checkered patterns on textiles. Kitchen wares such as canisters and Bread boxes tended to be softly painted with perhaps a simple decal.

In 1935 the National Modernization Bureau was established to promote modernization throughout the country. Manufacturers competed for better designed appliances and kitchen accessories. Color began to enter the kitchens of the thirties and articles in magazines featured decorating tips on color schemes and how to incorporate the kitchen into the rest of the home. Kitchens were no longer work stations but gaining as much attention as the rest of the home. Small and large appliances were available in color and Sears and Montgomery Ward featured colorful kitchen wares and "japanned" accessories such as canister sets, range sets, cake savers, bread boxes and waste baskets.

1940s: The Postwar Colorful Era

The Post War kitchen of the 1940's began to become family gathering places and now tables and chairs made of chrome bases with enamel, linoleum or plastic tops could be added to a more spacious kitchen which replaced the smaller work centered earlier kitchens. Separate formal dining rooms were being replaced by kitchens that could accommodate the family and guests. The kitchen was becoming a very inviting space and primary colors dominated the interior décor palette. Magazines advertised products for your "Gay Modern Kitchen". Combinations of red, green and yellow or red and black were popular as well as brightly colored tablecloths, textiles and curtains. Flowers, fruits and Dutch motif were in vogue and found on shelving paper, trim, decals and kitchenwares. Appliances continued to be produced with streamlined designs, rounded corners and smaller proportions. The combination washer/dishwasher was introduced as well as the garbage disposal and freezers for home use.

1950s: The Atomic Era-Pastel Color-Space Age

Dramatic changes would occur in the kitchens of the 1950's as space age, atomic era designs and materials entered the scene. The fifties kitchen featured plastics, pastel colors such turquoise or aqua, pink and yellow (cottage colors), Formica and chrome kitchen table and chair sets matched formica kitchen counters and were easy to keep clean with messy little ones. After the war there was more time for leisure promoting kitchenware's and accessories for picnics, barbecues, parties and the home bar.

The introduction of color T.V. in the 1950s brought full color into America's living rooms where homemakers could now see all the exciting products and appliances available to them. Following World War II, there was a new generation of plastics and time for "gracious living" and entertaining. Kitchens and homes saw the transition from glass, ceramic and tin products to numerous types of plastics which made casual living easier. Melmac and Melamine dishes, Lustro-ware and Tupperware storage accessories and "thermowall" for picnics were a huge success. Vinyl was used for tablecloths, chair covers and furniture and bark cloth with boomerang and abstract shapes was popular. Tablecloths and dishcloths continued to be brightly colored and souvenir textiles were added to the home with tropical, Southwestern and Mexicana themes. Poodles, roosters and designs with kitchen utensils, tea pots and coffee pots decorated potholders, appliance covers and linens. Appliances were built-in and came in fifties colors such as turquoise, soft yellow, pink and copper.

Wheelchair Accessible Kitchen Or When the Chef Has Wheels

I get many questions regarding details of an accessible kitchen. Questions like, what is the standard countertop height from the floor to the top of the counter, or what is the standard toe-kick. The list goes on and on.  Are there special appliances or cabinets? In this article I will cover the basics, cabinets, flooring, lighting, electrical, and finally appliances.

Swivel Counter Stools

Cabinets
Most cabinet manufacturers offer specific ADA compliant cabinets which will give you a final countertop height of 32" from the floor to the top of the counter. They will also include the proper toe-kick of 9" high by 6" deep. This provides room for the foot rest of a wheelchair to slide under the edge of the cabinet. This however does not provide access to the cook-top or sink. The base cabinets that will house these items will need to have knee space under the countertop. Now upper cabinets present a different set of problems. Even if they are installed at the standard height above the base cabinets only the bottom shelf will be accessible to someone seated in a wheelchair. I personally like to lower them another 6" so that the bottom two shelves are accessible. Or you could save the expense and just leave them out. One last item, the base cabinets should have large deep drawers instead of cabinet doors, as these are more accessible.  

Swivel Counter Stools

Flooring
The flooring should be hard surface, such as wood or ceramic tile or stone. You should avoid any kind of flooring that has give or is cushioned. This kind of floor makes it difficult to move a manual wheelchair around as does wall to wall carpeting or area rugs. Avoid these items if at all possible. Even the most innocent of kitchen rugs can be a dangerous tripping hazard for the disabled or elderly.
 
Lighting
With today's need to be green, lighting for the accessible kitchen is no longer considered specialized. The use of CFL (Compact Florescent Light) bulbs and LED under cabinet low voltage task lighting is common place. So the only thing that really needs to be said is that you need to provide task lighting in all food preparation areas.
 
Electrical
This is one area that is often overlooked as far where and how to install electrical outlets and switches in an accessible kitchen.  Wall outlets are usually placed behind the base cabinet, either above or in the backsplash. For someone seated in a wheelchair this means they have to make a dangerous reach in order to use the outlet. It is better to install the outlet in the face of the base cabinet, just under the countertop. Or a popup multi-outlet can be installed in the countertop itself within easy reach of the wheelchair occupant. Switches should be placed at 48" above the floor so that they are within reach of the wheelchair occupant. Use rocker type switches for those with limited use of their fingers. Finally outlets that are on a wall without cabinets should be at least 18" above the floor for a safe reach in a wheelchair.

Appliances
While there is no need for specialized or custom appliances, certain types of appliances are best in an accessible kitchen. Let's start with the stove for example, a conventional range cannot be used, A separate cook-top and oven unit will need to be used. As mentioned before the cook-top will need a knee space below the cabinet. The oven should be mounted in a base cabinet so it can be easily loaded and unloaded. A heat resistant surface at countertop level should be provided to place hot pans on. Next a drawer type dishwasher can be mounted conventionally and easily accessed from a wheelchair. However, a standard front loading dishwasher will need to be raised 9" to make it easy to load and unload. The sinks will have to have rear mounted drains to allow for the knee space beneath and still allow for a disposal. The microwave should be mounted below the countertop. Finally the refrigerator should either be a side by side model or a French door model with the freezer on the bottom.
 
There are probably other items that you can do to make a kitchen even more accessible. Try sitting in a standard kitchen chair in front of a problem area and ask yourself what can I change, that will make this area more accessible.  I hope this helps those of you who need to make your kitchen more accessible for a wheelchair.
